City of Eau Claire Downtown Street Design

« Return to Project Search

The City of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, has dedicated considerable time and resources to enhancing its downtown area. The City retained Ayres to assist with one portion of downtown, where the goal is to make the area more pedestrian friendly, to calm traffic, and to install elements that complement the downtown’s older architecture. The project also aimed to improve physical and visual access to the adjacent Chippewa and Eau Claire Rivers.

Ayres provided traffic analysis, transportation and land use planning, public participation coordination, and 30% design plans for the reconstruction of two streets.

As an initial step in the street design, Ayres conducted a traffic circulation study on the potential impact of converting two one-way streets to a two-way street system. Three public information meetings were held to present traffic circulation information and receive comments. The project team was able to address and discuss issues at each of the public meetings and incorporate what they heard into the design. The City Council approved converting the streets to two-way operation, and the conversion was successfully completed.
