Eau Claire County hired Ayres Associates to design the replacement of the bridge that carries CTH AA (Prill Road) over Otter Creek about 0.7 mile east of USH 53 in the Town of Washington. Planning for the future needs of this evolving location on the east edge of a busy commercial district, our engineers provided a design that accommodates the future addition of sidewalks on the bridge.
The existing 60-foot-long single-span prestressed concrete channel bridge was replaced with a 71-foot-long single-span 36W-inch prestressed concrete deck girder bridge. The new clear roadway width is 40 feet, and single-slope parapet was used on the bridge.
The bridge was constructed with wider abutments so 6-foot-wide sidewalks could be added to each side of the bridge in the future. Since this project is in a residential area just east of a busy commercial district, it was felt that future sidewalks would probably be necessary. The bridge is classified as an urban collector with an average daily traffic of 3,100 vehicles per day.
This project was constructed simultaneously with a federally funded roadway reconstruction project to the east on CTH AA.
