Dunn CTH G Tainter Lake Bridge

« Return to Project Search

The historic truss bridge over the Red Cedar River needed replacement, but the design of the new structure was just part of this project. Ayres participated in several public meetings with residents and businesses because of concerns over project scheduling and the detour that the bridge’s closure would cause.

Extensive historic documentation was required as part of the environmental document, and navigation issues were important in the bridge design due to extensive recreational boating in the area and an adjacent boat landing. Several alignments were studied for the river crossing, with the goal of minimizing impacts on local businesses and the boat landing while delivering the best possible bridge.

The new two-span prestressed concrete girder bridge is 252 feet long with a 36-foot-wide roadway and includes a raised sidewalk, simulated stone masonry, and decorative railings. The solid shaft concrete pier is founded in bedrock 35 feet below the water’s surface.
