Marinette Main Street and Stanton Street

« Return to Project Search

The City of Marinette hired Ayres to design the reconstruction of Main Street from Wells Street to Shore Drive and Stanton Street from Main Street north to the railroad right-of-way. The project, for which Ayres also provided construction phase services, followed an Ayres infrastructure analysis of impacts from Marinette Marine Corporation expansions and recommended downtown utility improvements.

Ayres helped the City win funding for the project, including $2,277,350 from the Economic Development Administration’s Public Works and Economic Development Program and a $506,000 Community Development Block Grant for Public Facilities from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.

Main Street and Stanton Street improvements included the replacement of the existing roadways and curb and gutter. Both roads were constructed with concrete pavement, so they will last longer under increasing truck and vehicle traffic. Sidewalks were improved along Main Street for better pedestrian accessibility. Stanton Street also includes a new sidewalk.

Utility updates were completed in both street right-of-ways, including replacement of water main, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer. The storm sewer improvements, especially along Stanton Street, increased capacity in the drainage area to handle rain events more effectively.

An Ayres traffic study analyzed improvements to address anticipated increases in employment within the project area, shift changes that coincide with school traffic, other land use activities in the project area, and pedestrian activity downtown. Considering these factors, new traffic signals were installed at key intersections along the Main Street corridor: Shore Drive, Stanton Street, and Ely Street. The Wells Street intersection traffic signals were upgraded. The Main Street, Ely Street, and Church Street intersection area was reconfigured to increase traffic efficiency.

New decorative street lighting was installed along the project area, and other beautification measures include banners, colored concrete, and other amenities evoking the marine characteristics of the area.
