FDOT District 2 Sidewalk/Trail Enhancement Projects« Return to Project Search
Ayres is providing design engineering services for trail and sidewalk enhancement projects along county and state roads throughout the Florida Department of Transportation’s District 2. Under a five-year contract, 26 task orders have resulted in customized designs that deliver safer travel for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists on roads where people often have had to walk or bike along the shoulder or on the edge of the pavement on roads where the speed limit ranges from 25 mph to 65 mph, resulting in high pedestrian fatality rates.
The contract was awarded in October 2012, and 26 task orders have been assigned to date for designs in northeastern Florida in accordance with FDOT standards. Extensive coordination was required among regulatory agencies and key stakeholders, including the St. Johns River Water Management District, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Clay County, City of Jacksonville, and FDOT District 2.
Project challenges have included designing within the existing right-of-way while designing around the obstacles of utilities, drainage facilities, and wetlands. These challenges make each work order different, and Ayres has juggled as many as six work orders simultaneously.
Among the larger projects within this contract was the design of a 10-foot-wide sidewalk and 10-foot-wide trail along the south side of CR 218 from Mimosa Avenue to east of SR 21 (Blanding Boulevard) near Middleburg in Clay County. The new shared-use path connects to an existing sidewalk and provides a connection to a library and a local ball park. Services included trail design, maintenance of traffic, drainage analysis and design, and environmental and permitting services.
Also included in the contract is the design of the 12-foot-wide bike path/trail along the east side of Timucuan Trail (SR A1A/Heckscher Drive) from the Shad Creek Bridge to the Fort George Island Trailhead in Jacksonville, Duval County. Services included trail design, maintenance of traffic, drainage analysis and design, and environmental and permitting services. The project was constructed in 2016.
Other projects in the contract have included:
Design of a 5-foot sidewalk along the south side of CR 18 from SW 80th Place to SR 200/US 301.
Design of a 5-foot sidewalk along the south side of CR 250 from 237th Court to 235th Road in Dowling Park.
Design of a 5-foot sidewalk along the west side of SR 51 from Demetree Street to Walker Avenue in Live Oak.
Design of a trail, new trailhead, and new entrance road onto Ft. George Island State Park along SR A1A/Heckscher Drive in Duval County.
