SR 13 (San Jose Boulevard) Resurfacing

« Return to Project Search

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), District 2, hired Ayres to design the resurfacing of SR 13 (San Jose Boulevard) from Sunbeam Road to Cornell Road. The approximately 4.75-mile project included pavement milling and resurfacing and improvements to intersections, horizontal alignment, curb and gutter, drainage, median, signing and marking, and three bridges.

This resurfacing, restoration, and rehabilitation project included adding bicycle facilities and sidewalk safety improvements. A feasibility analysis assessed options for new sidewalk, realignments, pedestrian crossings, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramp upgrades. The project required significant stakeholder coordination and public involvement.

The biggest challenge this project presented was accommodating the bike lanes while keeping the existing parking lanes. The width of the center turn lane was reduced to provide sufficient width for the bike and parking lanes. Parts of the roadway were supported by timber piles, which is unusual, but this ultimately did not require any special measures during construction.

Final design was completed in 2013, and post-design services were provided in 2014.
