Ayres has announced that Jan Zander, PE, has been selected as the firm’s next president and chief executive officer, effective May 18, 2026. Zander, who currently serves as executive vice president and chief operating officer, will succeed Bruce Ommen, PE, who previously announced plans to retire on June 2, 2026, following a long and distinguished career with the employee‑owned firm.

Zander joined Ayres in 1990 as a structural engineer in the Eau Claire, Wisconsin, office – the same year Ommen began his own career at the firm – and has since worked out of four Ayres offices while taking on a broad range of technical, operational, and leadership roles over his 35‑year tenure. He is widely respected for his integrity, collaborative approach, and deep understanding of Ayres’ business and culture.

“Jan brings the rare combination of deep technical expertise, proven operational leadership, and a genuine respect for the people who make this firm successful,” said Susan Kirkpatrick, selection committee lead and external member of Ayres’ board of directors. “Throughout our evaluation, it was clear that he understands both the complexity of our business and the importance of leading in a way that reflects the company’s values. What stood out most to us was Jan’s steady, people‑centered approach to leadership. He brings teams together, listens carefully, and leads with a clear sense of responsibility – qualities that gave us real confidence in his ability to guide Ayres forward.”

With the committee’s decision announced, Ommen reflected on Zander’s leadership and longstanding contributions to the firm.

“Jan has been an important voice at Ayres for many years, and I have tremendous respect for his leadership,” Ommen said. “We started our careers together, and I’ve had the privilege of watching him grow into a thoughtful, forward‑looking leader who always puts people and partnerships at the center of his work. I’m confident he will guide Ayres into a strong and successful future.”

In announcing its decision, the Board noted Zander’s balanced leadership style, his ability to connect ideas across teams, and his commitment to engaging employees in shaping the firm’s future. These qualities, along with his decades of technical and operational experience, positioned him as the right leader to continue advancing Ayres’ momentum.

Ayres remains focused on delivering exceptional service, deepening trusted partnerships, and upholding the values that have defined its growth for more than 65 years. As part of the transition, Ommen and Zander will work closely together over the coming months to support continuity and maintain the strong client service Ayres is known for.

“I’m honored to step into this role and grateful for the trust placed in me,” Zander said. “Ayres has always been defined by the strength of its people, and I’m committed to fostering an environment where collaboration, open dialogue, and shared purpose continue to guide our work. Together we’ll build on the momentum we’ve created and position the firm for long‑term success.”
