Dodge CTH O, CTH EE, and CTH T Bridge Replacements« Return to Project Search
The Dodge County Highway Department selected Ayres in late 2014 to design three bridge replacement projects. One design was for a bridge that carries CTH O over the Ashippun River on the east side of the Village of Alderly in the southeast corner of the County. This bridge is about 5 miles southwest of Erin Hills Golf Course, which was selected to host the men’s U.S. Open golf tournament in June 2017. The U.S. Open is one of the four “major” tournaments on the PGA golf tour, typically drawing large crowds from around the nation.
The initial project schedule specified that Ayres would complete the design by the end of 2016 to allow for construction to be completed in 2017. After the design process was initiated, The Wisconsin Department of Transportation approached Dodge County about accelerating the project schedule by a year. CTH O will be one of the main access routes used for those attending the tournament, so replacing the deteriorating structure before the tournament was identified as a priority by those planning the event. Constructing the bridge in spring 2017 posed too much risk of the detour being in place in mid-June, affecting the ability to accommodate increased tournament-related traffic. Ayres staff prepared an updated schedule to meet the new deadline and successfully delivered project documents on time.
Located just upstream of the bridge is a small dam that helped to create Alderly Millpond 24, which provides scenic views from several holes along another local golf course, Deertrak Golf Club, located adjacent to the project site. The hydraulic design of the new bridge had to account for this structure.
A new dry hydrant was installed as part of the project, requiring special coordination with the local fire department. Designing the new bridge wider was important because fire trucks may need to park on the shoulder to pump water from the dry hydrant.
Construction of the new bridge was successfully completed in the fall of 2016 to provide adequate time for vegetation to grow back within the area disturbed by the project prior to all the additional traffic anticipated along this route in June 2017.
The contract also included designing replacements for the CTH T bridge over Mud Creek, constructed in 2017, and the CTH EE bridge over the Rubicon River, scheduled for 2019 construction. Approach roadway segments totaling approximately 300 feet were designed for each bridge. Services include environmental documentation, survey, public involvement, and roadway and structure plans. Single-span concrete flat slab bridges were selected for each new structure.
