Why Urban Design Matters

Why does Urban Design Matter?

  • It ties together the moving parts of architecture, engineering, and planning to create one cohesive space.

Urban design is all about juggling – and arranging – a multitude of moving parts to holistically create a feeling. No, a place. No, a place with a certain feeling.

Ultimately a well-planned space profoundly influences how you live, says Matt Ashby, Ayres Associates’ talented new urban planner, who brings 14 years of experience to his projects. The many details about a place – and the many design principles that bring them together – comprise things you may not be able to articulate or may not even quite notice. But those details are why one space feels better than another. An awning to duck under during a downpour. A comfortable place to sit and watch the local characters. Whatever the details are, your senses are consciously or unconsciously noting the good, the bad, and the ugly.
