Clarifying & Designing Where Rivers & Infrastructure Meet

Job No. 1 for our team is designing for the healthy interaction between river systems and infrastructure – most commonly bridges and dams. But it’s not enough to design a solution. If our client does not understand how the solution works and how it is sustainable against – as well as with – the forces of nature, then we have not done our job. We want you to feel confident in our work not only because of our long legacy of excellence, but also because we have effectively communicated the “how” and “why” behind our designs and analyses.

Aligning with your mission and pursuing your goals is what gets us out of bed in the morning. We are in our element when you invite us to come beside you to work as a collaborative team to investigate and quantify a problem, pursue multiple possible solutions, and take one of those alternatives to the finish line. We are at home within a large, world class, multidisciplinary team of experts who share our passion for creative solutions that safely place infrastructure alongside one of our greatest natural resources.

Why do our clients trust us? We are certified national instructors of hydraulics courses, and we’ve literally written the book on many river-related topics. Our decades of leadership in developing federal manuals and trainings relating to bridge and culvert hydraulics and scour allow us to quickly and confidently identify pragmatic solutions. Understanding the practical reasoning behind federal guidelines significantly flattens our learning curve and takes us right to sound solutions.

Quality Driven by Expertise

Quality matters so much to Ayres’ river and water resources experts that it is built into our processes. Quantitative analysis informs the development of each project, and lessons learned from each project are captured and fed back into our training and processes.

Our goal is constant improvement of the state of our practice, and what motivates us is protecting the traveling public, which relies on the infrastructure we design in and around powerful bodies of water.

Ayres did a great job of taking on the project. Their willingness to jump in at a time when we thought we were facing a really substantial cost increase was so important. After working with them, it's clear we should have chosen Ayres in our first go-round, based on how great they've been to work with.

What is a comprehensive dam assessment?
+
-

New Federal Energy Regulatory Commission rules took effect in 2022 requiring periodic comprehensive assessments of hydroelectric dams. Ayres was among the initial consulting firms properly equipped to conduct assessments according to the new requirement for deeper risk assessments – requiring approximately 10 times the effort of previous dam assessments while also taking two years to complete, compared with a few weeks under the old rules. Essentially the new assessments require experts to ignore previous assumptions and inspection reports and instead gather as much historical information as possible. Among the tools used are two-dimensional floodplain modeling, aerial lidar, bathymetric data, public inventories of nearby buildings, census data, GIS, drone flights, local libraries, construction records, reviews of past dam failures, and evaluation of dams that have withstood the test of time.

Can engineers make rivers more stable and resilient in high-water situations?
+
-

An engineering consultant that specializes in hydraulic analysis and river engineering can combine field reconnaissance with computer and physical hydraulic modeling to deliver solutions. Ayres is a firm whose expertise is recognized by federal clients, partly because the firm has written river engineering design manuals and standards that are in use nationwide. A capable firm goes beyond traditional riprap to provide lasting channel protection. After a thorough geomorphic investigation documenting channel conditions, a consultant designs customized bank stabilization, restoration, and river engineering structures. Innovative solutions include partially grouted riprap, articulated concrete block and fieldstone streambed linings, fish-friendly pool-and-riffle beds, concrete A-jacks bank protection, fabric-encapsulated slopes, embedded root wads, soil trenches, and native seed mixes.

How can lake associations and districts be proactive about water quality?
+
-

Hiring a specialized consultant with watershed hydrology and water quality evaluation experience can help lake associations and districts evaluate lakes and identify changes in water quality. Available services include management plans, aquatic plant surveys, lakeshore owner surveys, lake sampling, grant applications, watershed modeling, dam and spillway design, dam break analysis, shoreline restoration, and runoff water quality improvement.

What is a hinged floating bulkhead, and how does it work?
+
-

Developed by Xcel Energy and engineers at Ayres, the award-winning hinged floating bulkhead has become a valuable tool, particularly in dewatering tainter gates for rehabilitation and testing. The system has been used at projects across the nation to safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively dewater spillway gates and powerhouse intakes. The bulkhead caissons can be launched from shore, floated to the structure, and then filled – section by section – with water to quickly close off and dewater each gate for inspection and/or maintenance.

What is a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Assured Wetland Delineator?
+
-

This designation means that the wetland delineator who holds this designation can move wetland delineation reports through the approval process more quickly than other delineators. Wetland delineation reports sent to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources by an assured wetland delineator are approved without the usual WDNR field verification that must be done for reports submitted by other wetland delineators, saving clients up to 60 days on approvals, as well as related fees charged for these verifications.
