Partnerships Built to Last

Partnerships matter. Ayres’ experts invest as much time in their relationship with you as they do in your projects. With Ayres you get the broad problem-solving capabilities of a large firm, but you don’t lose the one-on-one attention of a small firm. Whether you’re improving a sidewalk or an interstate highway, you’ll get to know and value your Ayres team. This is a partnership, not a transaction, and Ayres’ goal is to earn your trust on every project.

Your transportation project is much more than pavement, and Ayres has the right expert for each detail. From freeway planning and location studies to funding assistance, roadway and bridge design, landscape architecture, and construction services, Ayres brings all the specialists under one roof, so you don’t have to stitch together a team of many firms and hope they stay coordinated. One project manager holds the reins on the integrated Ayres team and guides everything on your behalf.

Next: Performance

In a Word: Performance

When every specialist on your transportation project works for the same firm, shares the same values, and answers to the same project manager, something important becomes clear: There is no buck to pass. If your project requires planners, aerial mappers, or landscape architects, each specialist is determined to deliver a quality result because they are clear on project’s mission and where they fit into the process. How do studies make streets safer?
+
-

Many factors contribute to traffic crashes. Traffic consultants not only find the locations where hazardous crashes have occurred but also identify substandard locations where crashes may be more likely to occur if improvements aren't made. Traffic engineers and analysts gather crash reports, conduct site visits to document hazards in the roadway, review lighting, study crash patterns, and prepare user-friendly intersection and segment crash diagrams. At Ayres, traffic engineering staff superimpose segment collision diagrams onto plan and profile sheets to identify hazards caused by hills and curves along a street or highway. Traffic engineers can then apply solutions based on nationwide research and industry best practices to help reduce the likelihood of crashes.

What is a “complete street?”
+
-

Also known as context-sensitive design, the "complete streets" concept acknowledges that street design is not a "one size fits all" proposition. Well-designed streets accommodate travel by all users – pedestrians, bicyclists, people with disabilities, public transit, autos, and trucks. Good street design also should be a collaborative effort among land use planners, engineers, and community groups, and it accounts for land accessibility, traffic operation, on-street parking, aesthetics, safety, landscape architecture, building setbacks, and intersection controls.

How can traffic signals be made more efficient?
+
-

Traffic engineers can help keep traffic moving smoothly, saving drivers fuel and time. Tools include optimization software such as HCS and Synchro. Signal timing plans are tested using microsimulation software such as SIMTraffic, PARAMICS, or Visim before implementation, reducing the potential of having to rework plans. And most importantly, field reviews are critical in making operations efficient. Studies show the benefits of signal timing outweigh the costs by 40:1, and polls of motorists show support for improved signal timings.

Are roundabouts really safer?
+
-

In addition to reducing traffic delays 75%, roundabouts cut overall traffic crashes 39% and fatal or incapacitating injury crashes 90%, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. That’s partly because they cut down the number of possible conflict points in an intersection. A quality traffic and transportation engineering consultant will evaluate whether a roundabout is the best solution for a site and conduct modeling of a proposed roundabout’s operation to show comparative performance. Ayres is not new to roundabouts. We've designed single- and multilane roundabouts, and we've helped communities to educate the public on the safety and simplicity of roundabouts.
