Sacramento River Levee Erosion Site Improvements

« Return to Project Search

Ayres performed annual erosion site reconnaissance on the Sacramento River Bank project for the Sacramento District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During these site investigations, our team found a number of critical erosion sites where the river has eroded into the toe of the levee. Given growing concern for levee stability, design and repair of many of the identified critical sites was put on a fast track. The initial project included design and construction on five sites. Complete plans and specifications were developed in a few short months, allowing construction to begin in summer and be completed before winter runoff began.

Shortly thereafter, we were issued a new contract for final design on an additional 14 sites. Phase 1 involved design of toe rock at all sites to be built primarily by barge during winter high flow. Design work was then initiated on Phase 2, the upper slope riprap and mitigation measures, with a completion date that allowed construction during the low flow summer period.

These projects were not emergency repair projects and therefore had to meet all permitting and regulatory approvals.
