Mead Library Plaza

« Return to Project Search

Ayres worked with the City of Sheboygan to re-envision Mead Library Plaza. Ayres completed alternative concepts and construction documents for the site that introduced play and green space into the plaza experience while preserving the historic Lawrence Halprin fountain and repurposing art panels from a clock to help define the gathering space. The design integrates the plaza with the street and improves its connection to the iconic fountain by pulling some of the fountain design elements into the plaza. The objectives of the redesign included:

  • Preserve/enhance existing art components

  • Simplify pedestrian circulation

  • Create opportunities for patrons to enjoy the landscape

  • Integrate the site with the streetscape

  • Anchor the west end of the adjacent art district

The American Council of Engineering Companies of Wisconsin awarded the project a 2021 Engineering Excellence State Finalist Award.
