Brown County STH 29/CTH VV Interchange

« Return to Project Search

Ayres designed a new diamond interchange between STH 29 and CTH “VV” in Brown County, replacing an at-grade crossing and creating a connection among several communities. The design team worked closely with Brown County, the Villages of Hobart and Howard, and the Oneida Nation on this Wisconsin Department of Transportation project, which required extensive public involvement.

Ayres helped Brown County secure federal funds to support an interchange with a new bridge crossing STH 29, along with sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and roundabouts at the ramp terminals and nearby intersections. Pedestrians and cyclists now face much less danger when crossing STH 29, and motorists have been given safer access to local businesses, compared with the high-crash, at-grade intersection they used to navigate.

WisDOT gave this project a 2022 Outstanding Highway Construction Award, and the project won a 2023 State Finalist Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Wisconsin’s Engineering Excellence Awards program.

The project connects several roadways. Five alternatives were evaluated for the realignment of Milltown Road, focused on providing roadway connectivity while minimizing environmental, business, and farming impacts. Several advisory committee meetings were held to evaluate alternative analysis for the horizontal alignments for CTH “VV,” CTH “U,” and Old Highway 29. Ayres held multiple public information meetings and developed newsletters to inform the public about the project.

Services included preparation of preliminary and final plans, environment document, reports, and public outreach. Significant coordination with the adjacent Oneida Nation was required. The project received BUILD grant funding and had an accelerated design schedule.

Construction began in 2021 and wrapped up in fall 2022.
