Mary Huisenga to Manage Ayres’ Stream and Stormwater Team

Mary Huisenga has been promoted to manager of Ayres’ Stream & Stormwater group. Huisenga, who is based in Fort Collins, Colorado, brings extensive experience as a watershed scientist and environmental planner, with a solid background in leading and managing multidisciplinary teams.
Her strengths include driving strategic initiatives and fostering collaborative environments, and Anthony Alvarado, PE, CFM, vice president of Ayres’ Western division says she demonstrates a proven ability to mentor professionals, optimize workflows, and deliver projects.
“Mary brings a wealth of experience leading teams in the consulting industry and a proven track record of successfully leading projects. We’re excited for her to step into this new role for us,” Alvarado says.
Huisenga joined Ayres in the fall of 2024 and had been working as a senior project manager in the Stream & Stormwater group. Before joining Ayres, she served as a principal water resources lead/team lead at a Colorado firm, where she led and managed a team of over 20 scientists and planners. In this role, she drove the strategic growth of water resource services across the Rocky Mountain region, building client relationships and implementing long-term business development strategies. She oversaw critical projects in watershed planning, wildfire mitigation, NEPA compliance, and renewable energy. She also served as a subject matter expert, guiding technical direction and advising on regulatory frameworks for water and permitting projects, establishing regulatory relationships, supporting compliance, and mitigating risks.
Huisenga’s project experience includes managing the Larimer County Water Master Plan to enhance water sustainability, providing subject matter expert support for the North Fork Wildfire Ready Action Plan to reduce wildfire risk, and managing post-fire and post-flood assessments in New Mexico. She also managed development of a watershed sediment management plan for Denver Water and handled federal and state permitting for a range of transmission line projects in the Rocky Mountain region.
Huisenga holds a master’s degree in geography from the University of Colorado-Boulder and a bachelor’s degree in environmental science from the University of Iowa.
