The City of Madison, Wisconsin, retained Ayres to design an addition to its engineering services building to provide office space for engineering services staff members. The addition is a two-story steel-frame structure of approximately 12,000 square feet. Approximately 5,600 square feet of the existing office space were remodeled.
The building is of sustainable design, following LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) guidelines. Although not formally submitted for LEED certification, the design would potentially qualify for a LEED Silver rating. Significant features include a roof covered with soil and vegetation (green roof) to control stormwater runoff and reduce heat islands. Excess stormwater is collected in cisterns for later use. Light shelves and awnings control unwanted light and reflect indirect light deep into the building to minimize the need for artificial lighting. Recycled materials are used in carpeting, drywall, concrete, floor tile, and other products.
Ayres Associates’ Madison engineering services division provided site grading, utility design, dimension plans, rain garden design, pavement pulverization, and design of the site erosion control and stormwater management plan per applicable Dane County Erosion Control and Stormwater Management guidelines. Stormwater quality structures were designed to remove 80% (5 micron particles) of the post-construction total suspended solids.
