Ashland CTH N over East Fork Chippewa River

« Return to Project Search

Ashland County retained Ayres to design a replacement for the CTH N (Grant Street) structure over the East Fork of the Chippewa River. This challenging site is in the Village of Glidden and features buildings immediately adjacent to the bridge and a railroad crossing 70 feet from the bridge. Ayres’ design reduced potential flood impacts and incorporated aesthetic features. The new bridge is a single-span concrete flat slab structure with raised sidewalks.

Timing and coordination also posed challenges. To minimize impacts, construction began after the Village’s Fourth of July parade and after sturgeon and musky spawning in the river. Special precautions were taken to avoid damaging the adjacent buildings, including using seismographs, providing building inspections before and after construction, and pre-boring piling. Several utilities and the water line needed to be relocated. Utility and railroad coordination added to the project’s complexity.

Services included approach modifications; aesthetics; public involvement; survey; hydraulics; environmental document; right-of-way; storm sewer design; bridge design; and plans, specifications, and estimate.
