US 17-92 General Hutchison Pedestrian Bridge

« Return to Project Search

The Cross Seminole Trail is a paved recreational trail that will run 24 miles through central Florida when it is completed. The design-build team of Ayres Associates and American Bridge was retained for design and construction of a pedestrian bridge to connect the trail over US 17-92 at General Hutchison Road.

A unique reverse S-shaped structure was designed to maintain the curved nature of the trail. The geometry of the structure required 3D computer modeling to understand the structural behavior and to derive the forces in the bridge members. The complex design required review and approval by the Florida Department of Transportation’s Central Office. Truss pieces were bolted together on-site within the US 17-92 median. Disruption to traffic lasted just a little more than a month. Once assembled, the entire S-shaped truss was lifted by a 300-ton crawler crane, rotated to the correct alignment, and set into place in a single night.

To help the bridge blend into its natural surroundings, the abutments were painted to match a tree theme. A trex entry way made of a composite/plastic was added to enhance entrance onto the bridge.

Services provided include structural design, permitting, drainage, driveway connections, sign and pavement marking, signalization plans, maintenance of traffic planning, and construction phase services. Safety features and railings were added.
