Sarasota Water Distribution System Upgrades

« Return to Project Search

Ayres Associates developed construction plans, permitting, technical specifications, and a bid package for four segments of the City of Sarasota water distribution system, as well as providing construction observation. The project included environmental services, right-of-way work, and coordination of specific areas of water distribution improvements with the Florida Department of Transportation, as some of the water mains were within the FDOT’s right-of-way. The design included installation using trenchless technologies (directional drilling and jack-and-bore) under FDOT highways. The use of horizontal directional drilling to bore under the Big Pass waterway greatly reduced the project?s environmental impact.

The project upgraded the City’s water distribution system by replacing or installing new water mains in the following locations:

  • Big Pass Water Main: Approximately 2,100 linear feet of new 16-inch water main under the Big Pass waterway between St. Armands and Siesta Key.

  • Bay Road Water Main: Approximately 1,800 linear feet of new 12-inch water main along Bay Road to complete a loop between Osprey Avenue and Tangier Terrace. This included a tie-in to the existing 6-inch water main at the intersection of Camino Real and Bonita Lane.

  • Osprey Avenue Water Distribution Main: Approximately 1,200 linear feet of existing 12-inch water main along Osprey Avenue between Magnolia Street and Jasmine Drive. This segment included a tie-in to an 8-inch water main at the intersection of Osprey Avenue and Siesta Drive.

  • South Orange Avenue Water Main: Approximately 1,200 linear feet of new 10-inch water main along South Orange Avenue between north of Mound Street and Bay Point Drive. A portion of this installation crossed under Hudson Bayou. It also included tie-ins to existing branch mains and services.
