Qualified candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a major emphasis in transportation/traffic engineering, will be a Wisconsin registered professional engineer and will have at least 5 years of experience including: traffic signal design and operations; traffic signal systems; traffic signal timing and phasing optimizations; traffic signal warrant studies; traffic impact analyses; traffic operation analyses and modeling; alternative traffic analyses; conceptual geometric designs; and signing and pavement markings.  Familiarity with current traffic engineering standards and practices of FHWA, state DOT’s, and local agencies required.  This current project assignment will be in the WisDOT Central office in Madison, WI.  The qualified candidate must be self-motivated with the ability to complete projects with limited guidance.


Responsibilities include tasks and duties related to traffic signal design and traffic operations, intersection and corridor capacity analysis, traffic counting, crash analysis, warrant studies, traffic operations analysis and modeling. These tasks might include: inputting data into prewritten computer programs, including HCS, Synchro, SIGNAL2000, TEAPAC, PASSER, TRANSYT, Paramics, SIMTraffic, TS/PP-DRAFT and other traffic engineering programs; operating computers; preparing drafts of memoranda, reports and other technical documents to be reviewed by the project manager; designing portions of a project under supervision;  researching current design standards and code requirements prior to performing design to avoid expense of redesigning the project; helping to prepare for and being involved with public involvement programs; and, providing data to technicians and other technical staff.  May be asked to conduct field investigation of design problems or perform field data collection for the production of reports.
