Nature-based Outdoor Recreation Grants (September 2007)
Is your community interested in acquiring land for outdoor recreation or conservation? Are you looking to develop or improve outdoor recreational facilities? How about restoring wildlife habitat? The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) Stewardship Grant Program may be able to help with money for your project. Now is the time to start planning.

What is the WDNR Stewardship Grant Program?
The WDNR Stewardship Grant Program strives to provide nature-based outdoor recreational experiences while preserving Wisconsin's most significant land and water resources. Stewardship grants can fund many programs, including:

  • Acquisition of easements or land.
  • Outdoor recreation projects
(trails, camping, picnic areas, water recreation, etc.).
  • Support facilities for outdoor recreation projects
    (roads, parking, restrooms, utilities, etc.).
  • Shoreline habitat restoration.
  • Rehabilitation of riparian buffer.
  • Shoreline enhancement and stabilization.
The program is funded ($60 million each year) through the year 2010. The program provides a 50% reimbursement grant for eligible projects, thus promoting cooperation between local governments and the WDNR.

When will grant applications be available?
Grant applications are typically available in January and due in May. Some planning can be done now to improve your scoring on your grant application.

What can I do now to help our project be eligible for a grant?
To increase your project rating, get the project referenced in a locally adopted comprehensive outdoor recreation or land use plan that is filed with the WDNR. Having at least one other municipality work with your community and approve the plan will help your project's rating. If you do not have an outdoor recreation plan, you can get it in place by the time the grant applications are due if you start working on it now.
