June 30 Hearing Set on Proposed Drinking Water Rule (June 2010)
Changes to the federal Safe Drinking Water Act requirements have required revisions to Wisconsin’s drinking water rules. The Wisconsin Senate Committee on Environment will hold a public hearing June 30 in Madison on a proposed rule relating to safe drinking water design requirements for community water systems and requirements for the operation and maintenance of public water supply systems.

The proposed rule would require all municipal water systems to disinfect drinking water. According to the Department of Natural Resources, approximately 71 systems in Wisconsin are serving water that is not disinfected (chlorinated). The rule also has new monitoring requirements for water supplies.

The hearing will begin at 10 a.m. June 30 in Room 411 South of the Capitol. This is an opportunity for municipal government representatives from around the state to share their opinion of the proposed rule with state lawmakers.
